House of Hollow – Book by Krystal Sutherland
This book was first introduced to me in a book recommendation video promising me that it would be a horror book. I was mildly disappointed because it was not like I expected ( a horror book ), but it did have a lot of other qualities that made it one of my favorite books.
In the beginning of the book the author made a point that this is not like the other mystery/horror books. It showed how the unique family was a bit off compared to the others. And the mystery of what happened when they were a child. This mystery book is about this family and the eldest, who went missing. Where did she go? Was she kidnapped? Did she run away? She was also kicked out from the house for a mysterious reason. What did she say to do that to herself? By the end I ensure that all your questions will be answered.
First the backstory and the characters. The main character of the book is Iris (the youngest). Her sisters are also a big part of the book. Vivi is the middle child. Grey is the eldest. When they were little they were missing for a few days. Then one day, out of the blue they are found all naked and without any recollection of any memory of what happened. They were questioned a lot. One thing that stuck was that they had changed. Their eye color changed into a blackish color. They even had identical scars on their necks. This led their “father” to one conclusion. That these kids weren’t his. Now in the present day, 10 years later, the eldest goes missing and all what happened in those years comes back, not the memories, but the mystery.
I usually hate paranormal mysteries because of the way it is usually portrayed and used. Most of the time authors use it as a way to avoid having a villain in the book and to blame it on something non-existent. In this book it was the opposite. The author from the beginning hinted at paranormal activities. The best part is that the characters who were responsible for their actions got what was coming to them. Almost everyone in the book had to carry the weight of the “secrets” and their action. Which again doesn’t happen in a lot of paranormal mystery books. Ex: Daisy Darker. This book was really good for a stand alone book. I usually prefer trilogies or a series because it has a deeper connection to the characters from the readers and authors.
In my opinion, this book is really great. If you love a mystery and dark fantasy mixed together you would love this. Just as a warning this book mentions a lot of death. It is basically the essence of the book. For those of you who have read this book, Who do you think the villain is? Do you think Gabe is right or do you think Grey is in the right? She was just trying to protect her sisters, right? Last, but not least, did you like this book?
